You've sold your house, just bought a new one, and it's time to relocate. Moving house can be a stressful time, with so many things to get in order before the big day.
Our team has put together a moving-house checklist to help make the move to your new house less stressful and more enjoyable.
1. Take the minimalist approach
Our top household moving tip is to have a big clear-out before you start packing. Work through one room at a time and sort your belongings into three piles: sell, donate, and dispose. It's far easier than tackling the whole house at once.
The less you take with you, the less you pay to move, and there's no sense paying to transport things to your new place that you no longer use. Be honest about what's worth keeping, and you'll thank yourself on moving day.
2. Pack similar items together and label every box
Few things slow unpacking down like finding kitchen gear mixed in with kids' toys. Pack similar items together, keep each room's belongings separate, and avoid the temptation to fill gaps with whatever's lying nearby.
Label each moving box clearly with the room name on the top and at least one side, so it's easy to read, regardless of how the boxes are stacked. Pack a separate ‘essentials’ box, too: kettle, phone chargers, toilet paper, a few mugs, and anything else you'll want on the first night before you've fully unpacked. Make sure you also gather important documents like passports, IDs, and key paperwork that you’ll want nearby on the day of the big move.
3. Plan the look of your new home
Once your move is confirmed, start planning how you want each room to look, whether you’re doing immediate renovations or working with the existing space. Take photos and measurements where you can, so you can work out where larger furniture will go before moving day.
Knowing what fits and what doesn't makes decluttering much easier, and saves you wrestling a chest of drawers up the stairs only to find it won't fit.
4. Recruit friends and family early to help with the move
Moving home is rarely a one-person job, so lining up friends and family to help is a top moving home tip. Ask early so people can keep the day free, and be clear about exactly what you need, whether that's lifting on the day, packing the week before, or minding the kids.
The more notice you give, the more likely people are to say yes, and the smoother the day will run.
5. Book a reliable moving company at least a month out
One of the best moving-house tips we can give is to sort your professional movers well in advance. Moving dates fill up fast over summer and school holidays, so don't leave this to the last minute. Ask around for recommendations, check local reviews, and get a few quotes before you commit.
A professional moving company will take the heavy lifting off your hands, and knowing transport is sorted gives you one less thing to manage as moving day approaches.
6. Arrange care for children and pets on moving day
Relocating can be exciting for adults, but unsettling for children and animals. Organising a babysitter or putting the kids into daycare on moving day means fewer distractions and a safer environment while you load the truck. For pets, a pet-sitter or temporary boarding means they're calm and out of harm's way.
7. Sort your utilities and subscriptions well in advance
Don't wait until moving day to realise you've got power, internet, and streaming services still registered at your old address. Contact your utility providers ahead of your move date to transfer services or set up accounts at your new property. Make sure you also cancel any domestic services, like lawn mowing or cleaning.
8. Update your address everywhere that matters
Change-of-address admin isn't exciting, but it's important. Work through the obvious ones first, such as your bank, insurance policies, IRD, and the NZTA for your driver's licence and vehicle registration. Then take care of the everyday accounts like your GP, your children's school, subscriptions, and loyalty programmes.
Making a list and ticking each one off is the easiest way to avoid missing something. Setting up a mail redirection with NZ Post is a good safety net for anything you forget.
9. Start cleaning at least a week before you move
A full house clean in a single day is exhausting. Instead, start packing and cleaning room by room at least a week out. Tackle one space each day so it feels manageable rather than overwhelming.
By the time moving day arrives, all that's left is a final once-over rather than a full-scale scrub. If the schedule feels tight or the property is large, consider hiring a professional cleaner.
10. Celebrate a successful move!
You did it! Moving house is no small feat, and once the last box is off the truck, it's time to enjoy the moment. Whether it's a takeaway surrounded by boxes or a bottle of bubbles with the friends and family who helped, you deserve to celebrate. The hard work is done; all that’s left is to create new memories in your new home.
