Tremains tips for moving home stress-free

Great news!

You've sold your house, just bought a new one, and it's time to move. Moving home can be a stressful time, with so many things to get in order before the big day. We get it, we've been there.

Our team have put together their best tricks to help make moving less stressful and more enjoyable for you as you make the move to your new home.

1. Take the Minimalist Approach

Have you ever noticed, when you're having a clean up or can't find a space for something, that you seem to collect a whole lot of stuff? When it comes time to move, having a thorough declutter of items you don't want or need anymore can be a truly satisfying feeling. Take the time to go through your belongings and put aside pieces you don't want or need for selling, donating or giving away to friends and family.

You'll find it much easier on moving day with less pieces to move, and there will be more room for upgrading! Less is definitely more when it comes to moving home.

2. Packing 101 - Similar Stays Together

A great pet peeve is when you've packed up your home, moved to the new place, and as you're unpacking you're running around and moving boxes from room to room with different items together. It can get frustrating and very time consuming.

When you're packing, endeavour to pack room by room, and keep all similar things together. By the time you get to unpacking at your new home, it will be much quicker to unload your gear in the right room, and quickly see what you've got all together.

3. Plan the Look of Your New Home

Now that you've bought your new home (or at least put in an offer), it's a great idea to start planning what you want your home to look like. What furniture do you love, or what has got to go?

Take some photos of your new home and use those to determining how you want it to look. You can start planning what will go where, what you need and don't need, and make it much easier when it comes to decluttering ahead of the big move.

4. Recruit Friends and Family Early to Help With the Moving

Moving home is definitely not a one-man job, so bookin your friends and family to help is highly recommended.

Whether it's with the promise of fun, or a cheeky beverage as you pack, having friends and family makes work much easier, and can be a lot more fun while you move home. Plus, more hands make light work!

5. Book a reliable moving company at least a month out

- ask around or take a look for local movers to help on the big day

6. Make a plan for kids and fur babies

- get a baby sitter / pet sitter, or put them into daycare / shelters while you move.

- give your kids/pets lots of positive affection when you've moved and try to maintain your routine to help them settle (favourite toys and blankets)

- Dogs: lots of walks and treats - cats: keep inside for 2-3 weeks to settle in

7. Cancel utilities, subscriptions, telephone (if you have one) and ensure it's organised for your new home ready for move-in day

- good time to change companies if you need to!

8. Make sure you advise insurance, post service, enrolments etc about your move

- don't want to be missing packages

9. Start cleaning at least 1 week before you move

- start bit by bit, room by room, so the final clean isn't as daunting

- or hire a professional

10. Celebrate a successful moving day

- you deserve it
