Where Good Design Feels Like Home

3 Bed/1 Bath/1194 m2 Land

A 1959 mid-century home, restored by its designer-owners with durable materials, honest craftsmanship and real comfort.

Set in established garden and bordering a park, this mid-century home pairs privacy with a relaxed, open-plan sense of space. Two generous double bedrooms, a single bedroom, a thoughtfully designed family bathroom and a light-filled gallery space (currently a home office) make it a home that works as well as it looks.

The design story

The original 1959 house and its 1970s addition have been brought into the present without losing what made them special. Floor-to-ceiling glazing and original timberwork have been kept, and new elements draw on the work of John Scott and the Scandinavian modernists.

Nicholas Dunning of OTO Group Architecture and his wife Amy restored the property as their own family home, and every decision was made with longevity in mind. Plywood linings bring warmth, texture and continuity throughout. Windows are placed to frame the garden and fruit trees beyond. Timber doors carry bespoke wooden handles made for this house, and tiled benchtops were chosen because they're honest and hard-wearing.

Sun, garden and setting

The property is north-facing, private and unusually connected to its surroundings. It doesn't just overlook green space; it borders a large park and tennis courts directly.

The 1,194m² section has been developed as an extension of the house, with an abundance of fruit trees, established planting, generous lawn and excellent off-street parking. Inside, the garden is always present through framed views and shifting light. This is a home that feels settled into its site rather than placed upon it.

A comprehensive restoration

The work here goes well beyond the surface:

• New kitchen and bathroom

• New roof and guttering

• New plumbing and a full rewire

• Insulation and heating upgrades

• Interior relined in ply

Outside there's substantial storage, including a shed affectionately known as "The Viking Long House."

The result is a distinctive mid-century home, carefully modernised and deeply connected to its setting. It's a rare chance to own a genuinely individual architectural home at an attainable price.
